Without a doubt, one of the hardest times of my life was when my mother was dying in the hospital. Knowing her time was limited and having all these things I wanted to say to her but couldn’t, because she simply could not comprehend, was agonizing.
It drained me; in the evenings, after a day at her bedside, I would walk back to the apartment Dave and I shared, ironically a stone’s throw from the hospital, to sit on the couch and just stare.
It was very important to me that my mother not see how hard I was struggling; I wanted her to look at me and see the same young woman she had always seen. Even though most of the time I wanted to show up at the hospital unshowered and in my pajamas, I made sure I looked nice.
I did my hair, put on makeup, picked out a decent outfit and I always accessorized. My mum and I shared a love of jewelry, you see, and so I wore pieces I thought she would like.
When she looked at me, I didn’t want her to see how terrified I was, that I was drowning in fear and sadness. I wanted her to see her daughter. I wanted her to remember me the way she always had.

As I am still adjusting to my new life in Pennsylvania, one thing has kept my stable; being of service. I have always been drawn to helping other people. Selfishly enough, I tend to get more out of it than the person I am helping.
There is a deep-rooted connection and belonging when I get to be there for someone else. Not in a codependent way, but in a manner that I have a useful trait and I get to share it with another person.
I really believe that getting out of my own head, forgetting about my own problems, help me realize all the good fortune and gifts that I am surrounds by. There is a freedom of letting go of negativity in order to be uplifting for another person.
And how many times have issues been resolved easily once you stop picking and pulling at them? I know if my life, once I stop looking for a solution, it lands at my feet.
But how does this make you gorgeous? The glow, darling. There is an underlining glow the flows through people who are really connected to their purpose in life, and it usually consists of aiding another person and make their surroundings better. Haven’t you always heard, “her personality makes her ugly.” The exact opposite is true as well.
Mother’s are very special and very important women. They carry you for nine months, and endure hours of labor in order to give you life. They are there for you throughout your life.
Mothers give up a lot for their children. Being a parent isn’t as easy as we may think looking at it from a our perspective. Many mothers are single parents.
Not only do they have to go to work during regular business hours, they have to come home and do what sociologists (life scientists) call the “second shift.” This consists of various household chores. Because single mothers are alone their work load is doubled.
In spite of all that our mothers do for us, day in and day out, a lot of times all they get in return is disrespect. It has become increasingly common for children to talk back to their parents; sometimes even hitting them. I am guilty of being disrespectful because I used to talk back to my mother all the time.
Sometimes I would say really hurtful things to her. This type of behavior is not okay. The fifth commandment in the Bible is to honor your father and your mother. The fact that it is the first commandment with the promise of long life and is said more than once (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:2) should mean something to us. But sadly, to many it doesn’t.
