Luzerne County Community College is a public 2-year college that offers certificate, associate degree, and diploma programs. The school was established in 1966 and is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools (Commission on Higher Education) in Philadelphia.
The school’s main campus is located on 167 acres and comes with 15 buildings that include 8 instructional facilities and classrooms, an administration building, a library, a campus center, a conference center, and a security & printing services facility. The school also has education centers in Berwick, Hazleton, Wilkes-Barre, Northumberland, and Kulpmont.
The total enrollment in 2016 is around 16,000 students in all credit and noncredit courses, and Luzerne is known for its small class sizes (the student-faculty ratio is 18:1). The school’s credit enrollment is almost 6,000 students, and the rest are non-credit students, mainly at the school’s Public Safety Training Institute and its Workforce & Community Development Division. The college will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2017.
Luzerne County Community College offers more than 120 academic, technical, and career study programs of which more than 80 are occupational programs (including certificate, degree, and diploma programs), 25 liberal arts and transfer programs, and 10 non-credit career training and development programs.
Additionally, the school provides hundreds of workshops, seminars, conferences, and customized training programs for business and industry both on-campus and off-campus. The school also offers a highly respected weekend or evening LPN to RN Program, and has ten Program-to-Program Agreements with several State Universities.
There are Early College enrollment options for students from 17 school districts, and regional businesses and industry may benefit from the school’s custom-designed continuing education and training programs. The school maintains a Dual Admissions Program with Misericordia University, King’s College, Temple University, and Wilkes University.
Luzerne County Community College’s operating costs are roughly equally shared among the county, state, and students, each group being responsible for roughly one-third the entire cost.
